  • About the Artist: Li Shi Jiang

Born in Beijing in 1957, Mr. Li Shi-Jiang is an important figure in the evolution of Chinese painting. He developed a love of calligraphy and painting early in his childhood. One of Li¡¯s favorite books at the time was Painting Collections of Jie Zi Yuan, which introduced him to traditional Chinese paintings and the theories behind classical painting.

By 1979, Li was determined to pursue an artistic career and gratefully accepted apprenticeship under Huan Co, a prominent artist in China. During his apprenticeship, Li started to learn traditional painting techniques, including how to paint tigers. In 1983, Li entered apprenticeship under Zhen Kou, an other prominent artist in China, and learned how to paint the Bevy of Beauties, a traditional Chinese painting, and learned figure painting techniques. The knowledge gained during his apprenticeships with Huan Cao and Zhen Kou became the basis for Li¡¯s works.

In the period after his apprenticeships, Li developed his own artistic style, which focuses on details without becoming crowded, which combines gentleness and firmness, which blends aspects of his subjects¡¯ physical and spiritual states, and which captures a variety of his subjects¡¯ postures and expressions. He also became adept at using landscape and environment to express deeper profundities and true emotions. Li has exhibited regularly both in and out of China, has been published in newspapers and magazines, and was also included in the ¡°Collection of Contemporary Accomplished Chinese Artists¡±. In 1991, when Li attended the Chinese Art Festival art exhibition at the Prince Gallery in Sidney, Australia, his works received widespread attention by an enthusiastic public.

In 1995, Li and his former teacher, Zhen Kou held a ¡°Tutor & Apprentice Joint Chinese Painting Exhibition¡± at the RongBaoZhai Art Center in San Francisco, California. His works drew high praises from exhibits attendees and much of his exhibit was purchased by visitors.

After this experience, Li continued to develop his artistic style. In 2002, Mr. Li held his own exhibition at the WenYuanGe Gallery in Los Angeles, California, which was a complete success. Much of his works exhibited were purchased by attending public.
